The question is: Why?
Is it that we're afraid of losing something?
Are we afraid of missing something?
I've always wondered why we look to live eternally.
I mean, even in a good movie we look forward to its ending.
So why do we want to live forever?
We loathe life, want it to end sometimes.
And then there are days where we wished we never existed at all.
So why do we feel this great loss, this great pain when we look towards our own end?
In reality, we should be waiting for it.
No more suffering, pain, agony, hunger, depravity...
... we'd never need sleep, food, water, or to breathe.
But yet and still, we look forward to being alive every day... forever.
Almost as if we're afraid of losing something.

The fear of the end is just that. It's the end! What happens next? Nothing (depending on your faith). And nothing is empty. I think we fear the absence of ourselves - and those around us. For me, I wind up fearing what would happen to certain people if I didn't exist. Call it "It's a Wonderful Life" syndrome.
